Property Description
Architect designed with both the environment and guest in mind, Paperbark Camp is ecotourism at its best, managing to provide a beautiful and comfortable base from which to explore the local area and to enjoy the tranquility of this natural Australian bushland setting.
Located on the banks of the Currambene Creek, Jervis Bay, Paperbark Camp is ideal for those who love being close to nature, but appreciate lifes little luxuries, not to mention wonderful food prepared daily by the camps chefs using local produce.
Accommodation consists of eight elevated safari style tents that have their own open-air ensuite bathroom, queen size beds, luxury 100% cotton linen and towels, locally made furniture as well as a wrap around verandah for sitting and enjoying the sounds of the bush. Or for the ultimate camping experience guests can indulge themselves staying in one of our four luxury safari tents, complete with its own bush bath with a view.
The Gunyah provides a central communal area for eating and relaxing with outside dining on the verandah during the warmer months, and in the colder months an open fire creates a cosy atmosphere for reading, playing games or sharing travel adventures with other guests.
Activities within the camp include canoeing, bike riding, bushwalking, birdwatching & spotlighting. Or spend an afternoon on the verandah reading that book you have been meaning to get to for ages, keeping an eye out for a passing kangaroo or the majestic black cockatoo.
Jervis Bay itself offers spectacular diving, snorkelling, bushwalking in the Booderee National Park, beautiful beaches, surfing, dolphin, whale and seal watching, golf and tennis. A short scenic drive away is Arthur Boyds Bundanon, local vineyards with cellar doors as well as the pretty towns of Berry and Kangaroo Valley.

Environmental Initiatives:
The objective of Paperbark Camp is to provide a unique and genuine Australian bush experience that is both ecologically and financially sustainable. The sustainable nature of the development was something that evolved naturally out of a desire to maintain the natural peace and beauty of the pristine environment chosen for the camp. After a full Environmental Impact Study was conducted as part of the planning approval process, many stringent requirements had to be met to satisfy concerns of various authorities, an arduous but ultimately worthwhile process that took four years.
Paperbark Camp has had accreditation and more recently advanced accreditation with the Ecotourism Association of Australia since opening in 1999. By continuing to operate a small, low impact and niche operation that caters to those who want to get back to nature, the owners hope that those who stay at Paperbark will seek out similar accommodation when next choosing a holiday and will perhaps think more seriously about their own day to day impact on the environment.
Measures taken to reduce the environmental impact include:
Architect designed buildings in sympathy with the landscape.
Tents have solar powered electric 12 volt lighting.
Only natural ventilation is used, no air conditioning.
No large trees have been removed.
Shower heads are low flow.
Toilets are dual flush.
Hot water heated on demand only, by gas
Light sensitive timer switches for public lighting.
Low energy use compact fluorescent bulbs
Revegetation of areas affected by the development.
No fencing to maintain the wildlife corridor.
Driven piles and shallow foundations only- all buildings are built off the ground
Continuous removal of exotic species - inc. blackberry and asparagus fern
Guest vehicles kept away from the camp,
Use of electric powered buggy
Strict adherence to the local Council recycling programs.
Use of recycled paper products where possible.
Rainwater used when possible
To protect the fragile wetland ecosystem, wastewater is pumped 900 metres from the site and processed by Council treatment works. The pumping system is protected by no-flow and level alarms.
Biodegradable cleaning agents are used.
Canoes, kayaks and bicycles are provided free for guest use.
No intentional feeding of wildlife
