Property Description
Melbourne Metro YHA backpackers' hostel is on the city fringe, with panoramic views of Melbourne from the rooftop lounge and BBQ. The hostel has a licensed café, YHA Travel desk, high speed internet, WiFi hotspots, Skype, ATM, cable TV and bicycle hire. Enjoy a free swimming pass, free DVDs, hostel activities and 24 hour hostel access, plus the security of CCTV, electronic door locks and limited secure parking. Winner of the 2008 Victorian Tourism Award for Best Backpacker Accommodation.
Melbourne has many festivals and events throughout the year, a vibrant nightlife to suit all tastes and budgets, the best cafes, shopping, art galleries and parks and gardens. all located close to the hostel for backpackers convenience.
Environmental Initiatives:
• A Solar Hot Water System was installed in 2000, with ten 440 litre units, each with 3 solar panels. The combined environmental savings of these units equates to approx. 70 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas or 59,000 kwhrs of energy from the sun. This system generates an impressive 75% of the hot water used within Melbourne Metro YHA.
• A Comprehensive Recycling System in our kitchens to help you to recycle your paper, plastic containers, glass bottles and aluminium cans.
• Melbourne Metro YHA has installed Water Saving Shower-heads and tap fittings in all bathrooms to reduce waste water. A standard showerhead uses about 15 to 25 litres of water per minute. A water efficient showerhead uses as little as 6 or 7 litres per minute - we hope this change will halve our bathroom water consumption.
• We have recently replaced all 52 toilets at Melbourne Metro YHA with Dual Flush Cisterns. Our previous cisterns had a flush range of 12 – 18 litres, while the new cisterns range between 3 – 6 litres. We hope to reduce our sewerage disposal water consumption by up to two thirds.
• Electronic Thermostats have been installed on all heating devices that immediately turn off the heating system once the temperature reaches the programmed level.
• This year Melbourne Metro YHA formalised their environmental commitment through a AAA Tourism Green Stars endorsement of their 4 star rating.
• Melbourne Metro YHA was one of the first city accommodation facilities to be accredited with Eco-Tourism Australia
YHA has established a Carbon Reduction Program to undertake eco-projects in its hostels, starting with solar hot water systems. Our research shows this to be the area where we can reduce emissions most significantly. It will also reduce energy costs. We will put all these cost savings back into the scheme to purchase or generate other renewable energy sources.
