Property Description
If you're not into big backpacker dorms, then small, friendly, BUNK FREE Melbourne Oasis YHA hostel is for you! Relax in an oasis of mainly twin-share rooms, a sunny gazebo garden, regular $2.50 pancake breakfasts and weekly activities. Enjoy 24 hour hostel access, easy access to the city centre, electronic door locks and some car parking. The hostel has friendly staff, a tour booking service, bicycle hire, high speed internet with Skype, a free swimming pass and free DVDs.
Comment: "Useful to have kitchens on several floors. Great little courtyard in the back. Being outside the main hustle and bustle of the city was both a good and bad thing. Quieter but means you have to suss out the public transport quickly unless you want to hoof it into town on foot"
The hostel is just 2.5km (5-10 minutes by tram) from Melbourne and next to the beautiful Royal Park. Easy access to the Aquarium, Zoo and the fantastic Queen Victoria Market. Relax in our lovely outdoor garden area, enjoy your free entry pass to the 'City Baths' heated pool and free video/dvd hire. The hostel has 2 fully equipped kitchens, bicycle hire, BBQs, pancake breakfasts, movie nights and more.
Melbourne has many festivals and events throughout the year, a vibrant nightlife to suit all tastes and budgets, the best cafes, shopping, art galleries and parks and gardens. all located close to the hostel for backpackers convenience.
Environmental Initiatives:
• A Solar Hot Water System was installed in 2000, with three 440 litre units, each with three solar panels. The combined environmental savings of these units equates to approx. 21 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas or 17,700 kwhrs of energy from the sun. This system generates an impressive 75% of the hot water used within Melbourne Oasis YHA.
• Individual room heaters within the hostel are programmed on a timer that only allows use between 4pm and 10 am.
• Water Saving showerheads and tap fittings were installed in all bathrooms to reduce waste water. A standard showerhead uses about 15 to 25 litres of water per minute. A water efficient showerhead uses as little as 6 or 7 litres per minute - we hope this change will halve our bathroom water consumption.
• A Comprehensive Recycling System operates in the hostel’s two kitchens to help recycle paper, plastic containers, glass bottles and aluminum cans.
• Our recycling system goes a step further than most - organic waste from the guest kitchens is recycled through our on-site Worm Farms to produce fertiliser, which in turn nourishes the Herb Garden.
• An on-site Rain Water Tank collects fresh water which is then used to water the Oasis Garden and Herb
• Melbourne Oasis YHA has formalised their environmental commitment through a AAA Tourism Green Stars endorsement of their 3.5 star rating.
• Melbourne Oasis YHA was one of the first city accommodation facilities to be accredited with Eco-Tourism Australia.
YHA has established a Carbon Reduction Program to undertake eco-projects in its hostels, starting with solar hot water systems. Our research shows this to be the area where we can reduce emissions most significantly. It will also reduce energy costs. We will put all these cost savings back into the scheme to purchase or generate other renewable energy sources.
