Environmental Initiatives:
"Peppermint Park borders the Locke Nature reserve, which consists of 780 acres of natural bushland and the Buayannup River, so environmental considerations are an integral part of park management,” says Company Director Craig Robins.

When the park was redeveloped in 2004 the owners worked closely with local conservation bodies to enable the local Western Ringtail Possum, which is now categorised as a schedule one endangered species, to remain on the campsite.

Other actions taken during planning and construction include:
• a complete environmental risk audit
• the use of recyclable and sustainable materials where possible
• the selection of a colour scheme that would blend into the environment
• the installation of energy conservation methods including reverse air conditioning, overhead fans to reduce air-conditioning reliance in summer and the use of key tags to reduce energy use when guests are not in cabins
• a comprehensive sewer system across the whole park to ensure no direct impact on the groundwater table, which is very close to the ground surface
• dual flush systems, low flow showerheads and rainwater tanks for drinking water
• the planting of 1600 new native trees and shrubs
• the retention and protection of a wildlife lake to attract native birds

To further protect the native flora and fauna, the park does not allow guests to bring pets or light fires in the park. A waste minimisation policy of reduce, reuse and recycle is employed.

The park's ecotourism accreditation has validated the work already done and reminds guests that the environment remains an important consideration. However, the camp is continuing to develop and has put into action further initiatives include the following:
Landscaping
• On going weed eradication program.
• Managers and staff educated about which plants are native to the area.
Water Use
• Yearly inspections of all sewer inspection points to ensure leaks are detected
• Regular inspections by staff of all water outlets to ensure they are not leaking
• Water flow devices fitted to at least 80% by June 09
• Ground covers and mulching to be extended to conserve soil moisture.
Solid Waste
• Number of bins used for recycling purposes and placed in busy areas around the park to be increased.
• Reduction in the amount of paper used in the office by changing the method the park promotes and confirms bookings to email.
Energy
• An audit of all lighting at the park to be completed to ensure that at least 20% of all light bulbs are energy efficient
• Ensuring that at least 50% of all non security lights in public areas have timers or sensors
• Ensuring that the policy of shutting down street lighting in the park during the low season is enforced by management.
• More signs to be placed in public areas asking guests to save power by turning lights off.
Guest Education
• Information pamphlet on the Western Ringtail Possum available for guests.
• During school holidays, possum education evenings will be held.
• List of environmental initiatives distributed to guest compendiums and displayed in the reception area for guests to see.
Product Use
• A policy to be produced to ensure that environmentally friendly product and Australian made or owned product will take priority over other products purchased.
