Property Description

‘Wild Bush Luxury’ is a term we coined to encapsulate the style of experience at Bamurru.

The focus of your stay at Bamurru is in the environment around you and the wildlife and birdlife for whom it is home. Each individual safari suite is designed to blend with the surrounding bush and as such exposes guests to the sights and sounds of the bush around you, whether it is the haunting call of a Whistling Kite, the raucous cacophony from the Blue-winged Kookaburras as dawn breaks or the sound of a full grown buffalo splashing its way through the floodplains just a short distance from your bed. The morning chorus of tens of thousands of Magpie Geese, after whom the camp is named, is an experience in itself.

Features in each retreat include:

With no telephones, TVs, CD players or the typical features of a hotel room to distract you, your focus turns to the surrounding environment. With just 9 safari suites built amongst the savannah bush fringing the floodplains, the camp is exclusive and guests will not see other tourists on the property.

Each safari suite is ensuite and raised on a timber platform, with space for sitting out the heat of day with a good book or watching the local wildlife.

Meals in the lodge building are wholesome and innovative with a hint of native produce in many dishes. Your hosts will provide an informal level of attention that is only possible when you are one of a small number of guests. It is their knowledge of the area that brings the experience alive.

Environmental Initiatives:

With a mission to provoke, inspire and change people’s views about conservation issues, the 240 solar panel powered lodge was built and designed to blend in with and have a minimal impact on the environment.
Guests come to Bamurru to experience a beautiful wilderness region and its prolific wildlife and birdlife. The coastland floodplains and wetlands of the Top End are sensitive habitats and the camp’s presence in their midst must by necessity be low impact and in tune with the surrounding environment.

Energy
- The bulk (approx. 75%) of the camp’s power is generated by the sun through an array of 128 solar panels. This not only ensures a predominantly clean source of energy but also allows guests to hear the sounds of the bush at night without the noise of a diesel generator in the background.
- Our hot water is solar generated.
- Only 3 rooms have air conditioning (for the tropical wet season months) and this is only provided with a surcharge to cover the additional fuel burn required to support it.
- Rooms are not equipped with hairdryers (though one is available on request).
- Our newest rooms have overhead fans and mesh screen walls which allows the coastal breezes to naturally cool the interiors. Rooms expose guests to the sights and sounds of the surrounding bush with floor to ceiling mesh screens on 3 sides.

Water
- Our drinking water is filtered from bore water and for activities during the day or in camp, reusable water bottles are provided. We do not buy plastic mineral water bottles.

Recycling
- Chemical containers are all reused.
- Bottles are recycled. This requires a 3 hour drive into Darwin to the recycling plant.

Chemical Use
- All linen, supplied by EcoDownUnder, is organic cotton and has no chemicals in it.
- Our laundry detergents are eco-certified.
- Sheets are a sand colour and are not bleached to maintain pure whiteness. Their composition means that we are able to hang dry them straight without the need to iron them.
- Soaps for guests are produced locally and are chemical free and incorporate native herbs.

Design
The camp was built with a minimal impact on the environment, i.e. the rooms and lodge were constructed amongst the fringing bush on the edge of the floodplains, using the pandanus palms and woodland for natural cover.

Extra Initiatives
- Guest torches do not have batteries and are recharged with a simple winding lever.
- Wherever possible we have used product that is local to the Top End of Australia in construction and in what we sell in the shop.

Contributions
We make a donation to Australia’s leading non-government conservation organization, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, for every client that we bring into camp. This is currently $5 per person per night and rising to $10 per person per night from 1st April 2009.

Education
Our prime motivation for what we do is to open the minds of guests who come to stay with us through the activities our guides conduct in the environment. This comes through the interpretation of the environment, the birdlife, the mammal and reptile life. It also comes through active debate of topical issues in the environment e.g. the role of fire, usage of water, introduced species and their impact on the native flora and fauna and the day to day operation of the camp as an environmentally sensitive facility.

With 1 guide to every 6 guests, we engender an environment where everyone can be involved in an interactive wilderness experience, rather than being part of a ‘talking heads’ show.
